Manifesto Series - Celebrate & Prioritize Diversity

Last week I traveled to Las Vegas to attend the International Builders Show where I got the chance to talk for 30 minutes about the importance of enhancing organizational diversity.  I wish I could have talked for 30 days.  As you might expect, this topic is pretty near and dear to our organization and to me, personally.

As a woman in homebuilding, there have been a lot of times when I've been an only.  Every time I have to walk into a room and I know there's a good chance I'm going to be the only woman in that room, I still give myself a pep talk.  Being an only is hard.  I feel immense pressure to rise up to these occasions.

Whether you're the only woman,  the only Millennial,  the only person of color or the only person identifying as LGBTQ+, it's all varying degrees of hard.  Sometimes even scary.  It's impossible not to feel the weight of the words you say being spoken for an entire gender, generation, race or sexual identity. In those moments, though...when you have an opportunity to show up as your whole self and as someone different than everyone else in the room, those are the moments that hold the potential to change you and everyone around you.  A big bright spotlight is the perfect time to decide to shine.

So it's probably no surprise that my favorite line of our Manifesto is 'Celebrate & Prioritize Diversity.' To me, this line means the difference in each of us is what can make the difference for all of us.  Studies show teams with diversity out-perform, out-think and out-innovate teams that lack diversity.  If you want references for that last sentence, hit me up...or just fire up the google and read until your eyes cross.  It's all there. The facts say we are better together.  We are better together because we're different from each other.  Our perspectives, our opinions, our ways of knowing and being are all unique and ultimately it's that broad spectrum of knowing and being that contributes to the best possible outcomes.

We're homebuilders - we build homes for everyone (except grumpy people, we try hard to avoid building for grumpy people).  If we want to build homes that connect joyfully and meaningfully to as many people as possible, we need a diverse group of hearts, minds, and experiences to help shape our business.

I'm proud of the steps we've taken to celebrate and prioritize diversity in our company - being woman owned and woman led alone still feels a bit revolutionary - but I'd like to see us take this further.  At a time and place in history where our world can feel sickeningly divided, I'd like to see us become the place where people of diverse backgrounds and opinions come together.  For ourselves, for each other and for our industry.
