Manifesto Series - A Home is a Sacred Space

A few years ago we built my favorite home of all time.  The Miracle Home for MIX101.5's Radiothon benefitting Duke Children's Hospital.  We pledged and donated $250k to the Radiothon.   The Miracle Home won a Gold Award at the Parade of homes, featured a secret bonus room behind a bookcase and had a built in espresso machine next to the breakfast nook. But none of that is why it's my favorite.  It's my favorite because the experience of getting to know the patients, families and caregivers at Duke Children's Hospital changed my perspective on what homes can and should aspire to be.

This line from our Manifesto - We Believe a Home is a Sacred Space - was inspired by our experience building The Miracle Home.

When I think about the home as a sacred space, I think about all the things that happen inside the homes we build.  Before we built the Miracle Home, I thought of our homes as the place where you celebrate your milestones, where you gather with friends and family, where you go to work, come home and cook dinner, maybe watch some tv, go to bed and then get up to do it all over again the next day.

After we built the Miracle Home, I realized how much of that narrative I was taking for granted as simple everyday things when really, what I've described are more like simple everyday privileges.   Luxuries, really.  Because if your child or someone you love is sick, there is no such thing as simple everyday things.  There is just focusing on getting that person healthy.

The Miracle Home expanded my thoughts about what happens inside our homes and we arrived at this notion of the sacredness of everyday life.  Because in addition to the list of everyday privileges I described above,  our homes are also the places where we grieve our losses, anguish over life changing decisions, stay up all night with newborns who refuse to sleep, and receive news that changes us forever.  Our homes are the backdrop of someone's life.  To us, there's nothing more sacred than that.

What matters to us is that our homes inspire someone to live their life authentically and unapologetically, which takes a whole lot of courage.  We hope every home we build inspires someone to live the life they've imagined.  And when life takes an unexpected turn, we hope your home is also the place where you feel safe and are able to gather the strength to heal.

A home is sacred because of what happens there, not because of the price, the upgrades, the location or the size.  Every home is sacred.  Not just the ones we get to build.
